The Nepal Academy formerly known as the Royal Nepal Academy is a national institution in Nepal that promotes the country's languages, literature, culture, social sciences, and philosophy. Through organizing national and international events, the academy commissions research and seeks to advance the advancement of artistic and intellectual endeavor.
The development of a national cultural academy in Nepal was advocated by prominent national figures such as poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota throughout the 1900s.Originally known as the Nepal Academy of Literature and Art, the Academy was founded in 1957. After the Royal Nepal Academy Act of 1974 was passed, it was subsequently renamed the Royal Nepal Academy. The Nepal Academy Act 2007, which was passed by the Nepalese Parliament, changed its name to the Nepal Academy following the country's 2008 election to the Democratic Federal Republic of Nepal.
The National Folk Music and Dance Festival, the National Cultural Festival, a Bhanu Jayanti event honoring poet Bhanubhakta Acharya, theatrical productions, and a national poetry competition are all annually organized by the school.
